The Houston City Council gave its approval last week to host Texas County Relay for Life later this year in Emmett Kelly Park.

A delegation comprised of Scott Roberts, Elaine Campbell and Dara Jackson made the request to hold the American Cancer Society fund-raiser in the park rather than Tiger Stadium, where the field will undergo work to reseed it, according to information discussed at the meeting.

In other matters, members:

-Heard that some Briarwood Drive homeowners are interested in acquiring property west of their homes from the Ferguson estate. The city is hopeful that a survey and plat might be developed for the transactions. City ordinance requires a survey and plat if a lot is more than one acre.

-Learned that the water department plans to add an additional 200 transmitters used to capture data for meter readings. About 60 will be bought to replace defective units. The cost is about $25,200.

-Heard that the city’s annual routine audit is under way.

-Are considering converting a small pool at the Houston Municipal Swimming Pool to a water play area. The cost is under study in coordination with the Houston Park Board.

-Heard the city continues to look for a solution to meet its electrical needs after Sho-Me Power Corp. no longer sells power in about three years.
