The first day of the next school year at Houston will be Aug. 17. The decision came Monday during a meeting of the Houston board of education.

If all goes as planned, the late day of student attendance would be May 12.

In other matters, members:

-Renewed the district’s agreement with the Missouri School Boards Association to maintain the district’s policies.

-Will create a new Title I reading position in the elementary school, which will be funded with federal monies. The additional teacher will work with students individually and in small groups, primarily in the younger grades, to help those who are struggling to learn to read well.

-Heard a presentation by the Exceptional Child Cooperative to add two new positions. The matter was tabled until next month. The district is the fiscal agent for the multi-district education group based in Houston.
