A recent Houston High School graduate will compete for the second consecutive year in the national tournament of the National Forensics League.
Lacon Smith will compete in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate June 13-18 in Kansas City. She is the first HHS student to qualify for nationals two consecutive years in the category. She competed last year in Birmingham, Ala.
Smith has earned multiple awards in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate her senior year:
–Second place, Nixa Invitational.
–Second place, Jefferson City Invitational.
–First place, MSHSAA districts in Camdenton.
–Third place , state in Columbia.
–Second place (out of 60 competitors), Springfield districts.
Smith will be entering the pre-law program this fall at William Jewell College in Liberty. The college, which is ranked fifth in the nation, is known for its national participation and significant success in collegiate debate. Smith received a $20,000 debate scholarship.
