Jackie “Jack” Dene Bates of Licking, 73, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Cox South Hospital.

He was born March 30, 1937, in Hazelton, son of George and Ora Bates Gooding. He and Betty Skaggs were married May 23, 1959.

He served with the Army in Washington and Germany. He worked at Houston MFA, Rawlings and Stanley’s IGA in Licking, Halliburton Oil in Oklahoma, J.L. Friend Lumber and the City of Licking, where he retired in March of 1999. He also served with the Licking Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a member of Raymondville United Methodist Church and former member of Licking United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Diane Gooding Floyd and Marie Jones; and a brother, Wesley Gooding.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty; a daughter, Jackie Bates Duncan of Licking; a son, Howard Bates of Plano, Texas; two brothers, Doyle Gooding and Dale Gooding of Licking; two nieces; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other family members.

Services were Friday, Sept. 3, at Fox Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Maggie Kramer officiating. Burial with full military honors was in Boone Creek Cemetery.
