Morris Eugene “Gene” Roberts, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011.

He was born Oct. 15, 1928, in Hartshorn, son of Floyd Montgomery and Anna Estella Murfin Roberts. He and Gloria Irene Green were married July 19, 1950, in West Plains

He graduated from Summersville High School at the age of 17 and enlisted in the Air Force. He served for three years during WWII in Okinawa. He played several instruments in a band while serving. He accumulated thousands of albums and 45’s.

He was a longtime resident of House Springs. He worked for the railroad and was a telegraph operator. He retired after 39 years. He volunteered as a disc jockey for several radio stations. He loved playing listeners’ requests. He won many awards as the “best station” playing country-western bluegrass music. He co-wrote many songs and was named in 2003 to the “Who’s Who” list of country music personalities in the St. Louis area.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Gloria.

Survivors include four daughters, Pay Moyer of High Ridge, Norma Skelton of Versailles and Mona Roberts and Teresa Lucas of House Springs; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other family members.

Services were Sunday, Jan. 16, at Bradford Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Green officiating. Burial was in Summersville City Cemetery.
