The Missouri Department of Revenue on Tuesday offering several tips to last-minute tax filers.

The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging in cooperation with the IRS will be offering seniors ages 60 and older free assistance in completing state and federal tax forms.

Services begin Tuesday, Feb. 6, at senior centers in Houston and Licking. Even if a person does not need to file state or federal returns, they may qualify for a Missouri rebate on rent expense, real estate tax or nursing home expense. IRS-certified volunteers are available to provide confidential assistance with completing the rebate claims under the MO-PTC program.

Persons should bring the following paperwork to the tax site:

–Last year’s tax return (if available).

–A cancelled check for direct deposit.

–All income statements (i.e., 1099 Social Security statements, pension/retirement fund statements, interest dividends, W-2’s, etc.).

–Paid real estate property tax receipt or a statement of entire rent for 2010 (with landlord’s signature and Social Security number or Employer Identification Number).

–If the home is on more than five acres or if you own a mobile home, bring a statement (form 948) from the county assessor showing the homestead portion.

–If you are a disabled veteran (or otherwise disabled), provide documents of proof.

Tax counselors can determine eligibility for the Missouri Property Tax Credit (housing expense) rebate. PTC rebates take into consideration real estate property tax, rent, mobile home lot rental, personal property tax on mobile homes and nursing home costs paid from personal resources. Applicants must have been 65 or older by Dec. 31, 2010, and must have been a Missouri resident for the entire year of 2010, 60 or older if receiving surviving spouse Social Security benefits or 100 percent disabled.

To schedule an appointment, call 417-967-4119 in Houston or 573-674-3558 in Licking. For additional sites, call 800-497-0822.

Homebound seniors are welcome to contact the senior center for free in-home consultation.
