Deputies with the Texas County Sheriff's Department handled several investigations during the last week.

A Licking man and woman were arrested Feb. 24 by the Texas County Sheriff’s Department on charges of removing items belonging to their landlord from a home they were renting on Highway C in Licking.

The landlord, a 60-year-old Licking man, called Feb. 22 to report the theft. Later that day, the man and woman, both 32, were picked up by Houston police and booked into the Texas County Jail on 24-hour hold pending charges.

The landlord said he had to evict the pair and when they moved out, they took things that didn’t belong to them.

The woman said she had purchased the articles and had receipts, but an officer observed that the items on the receipts did not match the stolen ones that had a total value of $1,095. The case was to be turned over to the prosecuting attorney.

The following are other matters dealt with last week by the TCSD.

Feb. 23

–A Mountain Grove man called to report that 60 silver coins valued at $2,000 had been stolen while in shipment by U.S. Postal Service from a company in Oklahoma City. The man said he ordered 100 coins and received only 40 and that the container they were in showed signs of tampering.

The case is under investigation by the USPS.

–A Raymondville woman called to report the theft of 20 aluminum wheels valued at $2,000 from her salvage yard.

Feb. 25

–A Houston man called to report someone camping in a blue tent on Lundy Road. When an officer arrived, the camper was gone.

–A Cabool woman called to report that an intoxicated man was kicking her car at her Cadel Road residence. When an officer arrived, the man was gone and the woman said she did not want to pursue charges.

Feb. 26

–An officer reported that he had responded to a single-vehicle accident on Feb. 25 at about 10:30 p.m. on Harry Drive south of Licking.

The vehicle reportedly had three occupants, two men and a woman. When the officer arrived, he observed a blue car upside down in a field after apparently striking a barbed wire fence and a wooden electric pole.

The female passenger was being treated by an ambulance crew, and the two men had reportedly tried to leave the scene on foot.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol took over the case. (A related story appears elsewhere).

Feb. 27

–A Licking man called to report damage to a Ford truck parked at his Mason Road residence.

The man told an investigating officer that he believed a 12-year old boy who was staying there had done the damage. The officer spoke to the boy and his mother and the child admitted doing the damage.

He showed the officer where he had broken out two headlights, two taillights, two fog lights, one back glass, dash gauges and the rear view mirror, and where he had pulled off several strips of chrome trim.

The damage reportedly totaled $420. The officer’s report was to be sent to the juvenile office for review.

–A man from San Diego, Calif., called to report the theft of several items from a rental home he owns on U.S. 60 in Cabool.

The man stated he had been informed that his renter had moved out and taken things that didn’t belong to her. The renter, a 21-year-old girl, told the investigating officer that the landlord had allowed her to stay there rent-free as long as she cared for his dogs, but that he had not kept the electric bill paid. The man said the items taken were worth more than $1,500.

–A Mountain Grove man called to report that a pair of blue jeans had been stolen from his King Road residence. An investigating officer observed no sign of forced entry, and the man told him no other items had been stolen.

–An officer reported that just before midnight on Feb. 16, he responded to a call about a semi-truck and trailer traveling southbound on U.S. 63 with no lights and in a careless and imprudent manner.

The officer had been patrolling the Licking area and waited for the truck at Highway CC and U.S. 63. When the vehicle passed the officer, the lawman observed that it had no lights and was traveling at a high rate of speed. He also saw the trailer swaying from lane to lane.

He also observed the truck strike a guardrail.

After following it for a short while, the officer pulled the truck over and a state trooper eventually arrived. Investigation of the incident was taken over by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
