Revenue from sales taxes collected in the City of Houston is showing a sizable increase in the first six months of the year compared to 2010, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue.
For the first half of the year, a one-cent sales tax collected by merchants totals $388,646, an increase of $64,647 from the same period in 2010. That’s a jump of about 20 percent.
Two one-quarter cent sales taxes total about $93,100, a hike of about $15,460 from the same period a year ago. They are used for streets, sidewalks and utilities. An eighth-cent sales tax totaled $93,098 for debt retirement on a fire truck.
The reports are considered a good barometer of economic activity.
