Delbert Lester Fulk

Delbert Lester Fulk, son of Mack and Ethel (Ice) Fulk, was born July 23, 1926, near Houston, Mo. He passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at his home, making his age 85 years, 7 months and 26 days.

On July 31, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joan Elizabeth Starnes. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on July 31, 1999. The event was hosted by nieces Marcia McKay and Judy McCarter and nephew Richard Mackey.

Due to failing health, he had stayed a few months at the National Health Care in West Plains, Mo., for rehab. The caregivers said regardless of how he felt he always greeted them with a big smile.

Delbert was a hard working man. As a young man, he worked at a sawmill and milked cows for several years. He began working for Brauer Bros shoe factory in 1959 and continued working when Brown Shoe bought the business in 1974. He retired July 24, 1991, after 31 years of service. He enjoyed gardening and tending to his farm animals, especially his pets. He also loved to go squirrel and coon hunting.

Delbert was a kind, gentle and caring man, always ready to help family, friends and neighbors. He never charged for his services. His reward was being able to help others. He loved his family very much and enjoyed his two nieces, Marcia and Judy Lay, and nephew, Richard Mackey, as children and later years of their lives. They filled the void for the children he never had. He loved them as his own and the love was mutual.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joan; his parents, Mack and Ethel; two brothers, Edgar and Bob; one sister, Lovene; and two brothers-in-law, Loyal Lay and Russell Mackey.

He is survived by two sisters, Lavonne Lay of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Zella Mackey of Cabool, Mo.; two nieces, Marcia McKay and husband, Tim, of Kansas and Judy McCarter and husband, Jim, of Broken Arrow, Okla.,; a nephew, Richard Mackey and wife, Stacie, of St. Peters, Mo.;, two great-nieces, Cortney McKay and Jenneca McCarter; and a great nephew, Jeffery McCarter.

Delbert will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
