Due to liability and insurance concerns, the Houston Police Department will no longer unlock vehicles in the city of Houston. The only exception will be for legitimate emergencies.

The decision — which has been being considered for some time now — was made official at Monday night’s city council meeting, where the council voted to discontinue the service.

“Most police departments have given up the service of unlocking vehicles due to liability issues and officer safety concerns with side airbags,” HPD chief Jim McNiell said. “I encourage residents to remember their keys before locking their vehicles and carry a second key in wallets or purses.”

McNiell named A-1 Wrecker Service, Romines Motor Company, and Triangle Wrecker Service as sources Houston residents can contact for locksmith services.
