With the news that health issues will keep Texas County Sheriff Carl Watson from seeking a third term, Lieutenant Melissa Dunn has decided to pursue the agency’s top spot.
The Texas County clerk’s office confirmed that Dunn, who has served 26 years with the sheriff’s department, filed Thursday morning as a candidate for sheriff representing the Democratic party. She said she made the move after Watson informed her that he would not be filing for office.
“Due to some recent health problems he’s had, he’s not going to be able to file for re-election this year,” Dunn said. “I’ve worked here a long time and I love my job, and I want to continue the tradition here. We have an excellent staff, we have an excellent facility, and I want to continue the good work that has been done by my boss.”
Dunn, 46, has served under three sheriffs with the TCSD. She started out as a dispatcher, eventually became jail supervisor and earned the rank of lieutenant about nine years ago. While working as dispatcher, she trained to become a certified officer with the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy.
Dunn said Watson has given her his blessing in her quest to be his replacement.
“I wouldn’t be doing this if he didn’t support it,” she said. “I think it’s something I’ve been trained well to do by my previous bosses, and I think I’m capable of performing the task.”
Wes Ellison of Willow Springs and James Sigman of Cabool both previously filed for sheriff. Both are Republicans.
