Houston resident Amanda Cook received her doctor of pharmacy degree Saturday, May 5, as the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy held its annual award recognition and commencement ceremony.

Dr. Cook, a former teacher at Houston High School, also received the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy Senior of the Year award and was recognized for her achievements in Phi Lambda Sigma, the leadership organization for the Doctor of Pharmacy School, and her membership in Rho Chi, the honor society for the Doctor of Pharmacy School (both of which are organizations of which only select pharmacy students can be members).

Finally, Dr. Cook was recognized for her membership in APhA-ASP, a membership organization for pharmacy students.

She attended the satellite campus at the University of Missouri-Columbia, which held its annual banquet at Les Bourgeois Winery in Rocheport on Thursday, May 3.

She was one of 25 UMKC students who attended classes in Columbia, and is one of two who will begin their practice in southern Missouri. She has accepted a position at Forbes Pharmacy in Houston and will start there near the beginning of June.

“I’m looking forward to starting my pharmacy career at Forbes,” Cook said. “I’m excited about working in the Houston community again.”

Her husband is Texas County Food Pantry Director Bennie Cook. They have three children and are expecting their fourth.
