Numerous citizens from around Texas County got involved late last week in a benefit for Raymondville resident Roy King, who was badly injured in a June 6 motorcycle accident near Montauk.

About 200 people representing King’s family, friends and motorcycle cohorts attended a dinner and silent auction Saturday evening at Raymondville School. A person involved in helping organize the event said about $2,700 was raised, which was donated to King and his wife Tami.

On the days leading up to the event, Kerry York (of the Houston Downtown Cruise-In motorcycle group) went around local communities taking photographs of people donning artificial white mustaches similar to the familiar real one that King wears. More of the fake facial hair was distributed at the dinner and auction (much of which was cut to shape by Tami King herself).

York compiled enough of the pictures to put together a photo album that was also given to the King couple.

“It was amazing how receptive people were to the idea,” York said. “People who you wouldn’t expect to say OK were having a lot of fun with it.”

After spending several days in intensive care in Springfield, King is currently continuing his recovery at NHC Healthcare in West Plains. With York holding a cell phone to microphone, he spoke to the crowd at the benefit event, offering his thanks for peoples’ generosity and encouragement.

The event was organized by Todd Dorman (of Houston), Rita Steelman (of Summersville), and Monica Wildhaber (of Raymondville).
