James Shelby Barton, 83, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Mountain View, son of George Shelby and Effie Vida Younger Barton. He and Beverly Ann Hogan were married June 21, 1975.
He served in the Army. He worked in carpentry most of his life.
He enjoyed the outdoors, including gardening, fishing and hunting. His favorite pastime was being with his family and many friends.
He was known as “Jim” or “Shelb” to family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Walter Barton, Claude Barton and Lloyd Barton; and two sisters, Louise Grandstaff and Edith Gall.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Barton of the home in Jadwin; four children, Shane Barton of Rochester, N.Y., Sara Barton of Springfield, James “Jay” Barton of Salem and Larry D. Barton of Farmington; two grandchildren; six siblings, Floyd Barton of Birch Tree, Glenn Barton of Excelsior Springs, Clyde Barton of Carthage, Genevieve Patterson of Marmaduke, Ark., Edna Caine Everette of Park Hills, Betty Cook of Birch Tree; and a host of other family members.
Services were Monday, July 16, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Steelman officiating. Burial with military honors was in Antioch Cemetery.
