Free bus passes are available at the Houston Senior Center for area residents 60 and older.

The Houston Senior Center is preparing for its annual “Main Event” walk-a-thon on Friday, Sept.14.

Letters have been sent, asking for sponsorship or donations. Walk Chairperson Doris Schuer will contact businesses and give information about the event. Seniors will collect pledges and walk in the event that helps them meet their goal of $5,000 for congregate and homebound delivered meals programs and services.

One-mile and three-mile routes have been mapped out, starting and finishing at the Houston Senior Center, 301 S. Grand Ave. Cash prizes and awards will be given.

The Houston Senior Center served 40,524 home bound and congregate meals last year.

The Houston Senior Center provides all the meals needed at the Licking Senior Center since July 11, 2005. This has increased the number of meals and hours it takes to provide nutrition to seniors in the areas. It also always individuals to remain in their own homes despite problems of aging, disability or illness.

Recipients of homebound meals and services are part of an age group that is rapidly growing in numbers and it should be recognized that increased human and financial resources are required to meet the need for homebound meals and services for seniors, said Bernadine Hohlt, administrator.

“We are asking for your help in this annual event. Even if you just give a little it all adds up to help services for seniors in our community available,” she said.
