Potential HVAC improvements were outlined by a firm during last week's Houston board of education meeting.

The Houston School District’s energy efficiency was presented to the board during last week’s regular board meeting.

Sam Clemens, a representative from TRANE in St. Louis, discussed his findings following an inspection of the district’s building. He has been working closely alongside Superintendent Scott Dill.

Clemen’s presentation included photos of the elementary, middle school and high school buildings. He discussed ways his organization could improve the district’s energy efficiency.

No decision was made by the board following the presentation.

Also during the meeting, board members:

––Approved hiring Kelsen Gilbert (technology) and April McKinney (paraprofessional) for the 2012-’13 school year. Substitute teachers Mildred White, Georgia Merrick, Ray Mabe, Arthur Thomas and Barbara Thomas were approved as substitute teachers pending verification.

––Accepted the resignations of Jessica Meier (paraprofessional) and Linda Robinson (cafeteria worker).

––Heard Drury University intends to offer classes in Houston. The board asked Dill to investigate the opportunity and provide a formal proposal.

––Were presented a report on scores from assessments taken during the 2011-’12 school year. Brenda McGowen, middle school counselor, shared the findings.

––Amended its policy to reflect a previous decision to hold board meetings on the second Tuesday of every month.

––Entered into an agreement with the L.J. Hart Co. for the purposes of municipal bond underwriting services. The agreement extends the working relationship, previously established for the same purpose.

––Heard from Dill about potential real estate opportunities for the district. Dill said there were ongoing negotiations that will remain private. “The school district is always looking to acquire land in proximity to the district,” he said.

All seven board members –– Tadd McCloud, Jim Root, Doug Castleman, Sharon Horbyk, Sam Kelley, Jo Holland and Tom Dunn –– were present. The next school board meeting is 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Exceptional Child Cooperative.
