The Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds will be transformed this weekend into a scene from the Civil War.

From Friday through Sunday, some 400 members of the Missouri Civil War Reenactors’ Association are expected to be in attendance during the “Fight for Texas County.”

The event was open to the public Saturday and continues Sunday, highlighted by battles staged each afternoon in the field behind the community building and Murfin Building, featuring infantry, cavalry and artillery units representing the Union and Confederate armies. Many other period-correct activities will also take place, featuring men and women dressed in apparel and utilizing tools and other items common in the mid-1800s.

The public was also welcome on Friday, but that day was primarily set aside for as an opportunity for area students to interact with participants and learn in ways beyond the pages of books. Admission is free, and parking costs $5 per vehicle, regardless of the number of occupants.

The remainder of the weekend schedule:

Sunday:

9 a.m. – camps open to public

10 a.m. – period church service

1:30 p.m. – battle reenactment
