Houston High School students will have the opportunity to pursue credits through online classes beginning the second semester of the school year following approval Tuesday night by the school board.
During his presentation to the board, Superintendent Scott Dill said the technology would allow students to take advanced courses not offered at the district. Students would take the class at a computer terminal during the school day.
The district has purchased 20 seats through K12 Learning for Online Classes. The board asked Dill to seek information about the costs to purchase more seats.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, board members:
––Heard a presentation from Vince Throckmorton, a representative of the CTS group in St. Louis, regarding potential building projects and facility upgrades.
––Approved an amended tardy policy for the middle school. It will be distributed to students and parents and go into effect Tuesday, which is the beginning of the second quarter.
––Lowered the age of the “golden age passes” from 65 to 55. The passes allow senior citizens free admission to sporting events.
––Approved an updated version of the budget from June’s meeting. The updated version, Dill said, was put together as better information became available to the district.
––Heard a report from Joe Montgomery about the district’s transportation program.
––Were presented an evaluation of the board by Dill.
––Went into closed session.
Board members Tadd McCloud, Doug Castleman, Sharon Horbyk, Sam Kelley, Jo Holland and Tom Dunn were present. Jim Root was absent.
The next regular meeting of the school board is 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Exceptional Child Cooperative.
