A Christmas concert is planned for Friday, Dec. 20, at a Houston church.

The Southern Ozarks Chamber Orchestra will present “Classics and Cinema Greats” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, inside the historic Star Theater in downtown Willow Springs.

The concert is sponsored by the Willow Springs Arts Council through a grant provided by the Missouri Arts Council. Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12 years of age.

The orchestra is under the direction of Michael Roy, the director of bands for the Houston School District. He received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Louisiana State University. While in school, Roy toured the United States as a member of the 2004-2005 Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corps as well as the 2006 and 2008 World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corp. In 2012, he became conductor of the Southern Ozarks Chamber Orchestra.

The orchestra is comprised of approximately 25 volunteers of all ages from West Plains, Willow Springs, Mountain View, Cabool, Houston, Ava, Mountain Grove and northern Arkansas. The live orchestra features instruments including violin, viola, string bass, cello, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, oboe, English Horn, French Horn, clarinet, flute, percussion and piano.

This concert will include classical numbers such as Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” and “Komm, Susser Tod” by Bach. There will also be cinema favorites from Fiddler on the Roof, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. A special treat will be a rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed by the brass section.
