Ice is plowed from Grand Avenue Thursday afternoon in downtown Houston. Snow began falling again Tuesday.

Freezing rain and ice hit the region Thursday, canceling schools and events and closing businesses.

Houston, which has not missed a day of school this year, canceled classes Thursday and Friday. Cabool, Success, Summersville, Plato, Raymondville and Licking also canceled classes both days.

I dislike calling off school based on a forecast,” Houston Superintendent Scott Dill posted on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. “However, it looks like we would have no problems in the morning, but significant problems in the afternoon. Half days are difficult for many parents as they have to make arrangements for their children on the spur of the moment. Cancelling school this evening allows parents to make informed decisions about tomorrow.

“For the record – I would rather be wrong every single time about canceling school, than to be wrong one single time and put our children in harm’s way.”
