Herbert Virgil Tuttle, 74, died Monday, Feb. 25, at his home following a terminal illness.

He was born Aug. 21, 1938, near Summersville, son of Gloster and Alice Cooper Tuttle. He and Alta Leona Plowman were married Feb. 12, 1948. He and Vera Fay Durham were married Jan. 6, 2001.

He taught his four boys how to work in the timber, hunting and fishing. He was faithful to attend church with them.

He became a Christian when he was around 9 years old. He was active in music and signing. He taught and preached the word of God in many churches in his later years.

He owned and operated a long term logging business and cut timber in several states.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1955. After boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., he was stationed on the U.S.S. Knudson Destroyer off the west coast.

He and his second wife, Vera, did evangelistic work and sang together. They presented gospel music at Houston House and the Bridge Builders Senior Center in Licking.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Alta; a son Allen Tuttle; his parents; two sisters, Selma Tuttle and Daisy Kirkman; and a brother, Everett Tuttle.

Survivors include his wife, Vera, of the home in Birch Tree; three sons, Randy Plowman of Summersville, Ronnie Plowman of Bunker and Johnnie Tuttle of new Bloomfield; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Terrill and Betty Terrill; and many friends and other family members.

Services were Friday, March 1, at Midvale Church with the Rev. Randy Scheets and the Rev. Pat Cronk officiating. Burial was in Midvale Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
