The Houston School District will hold a full summer school this year following board approval at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
School will be in session from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. June 3-28. Classes will be offered from pre-kindergarten through high school.
Also at the meeting, board members:
––Accepted resignations from Judy Murray (middle school social studies and reading) and Boulder McKinney (middle school football). Murray is retiring.
––Approved Emily Steelman as a substitute teacher for the remainder of the school year.
––Recognized Maggie Jadwin, sponsor, and members of Community Betterment Y.O.U.T.H. for bringing Rachel’s Challenge to the district.
––Approved multiple policy updates for the handbook.
––Heard a report regarding the gifted/at-risk program from Charlie Malam, high school principal. Due to financial constraints, the district does not currently employ a gifted teacher. Administrators will identify gifted students and provide the necessary resources.
––Received information regarding federal programs from Audrey Kell.
––Approved spending another $6,300 for structural framing on a storage facility for the district. The board previously approved $125,053 for the building and concrete. Gentry Construction of Houston will build the facility.
Board members Jim Root, Sam Kelley, Jo Holland, Sharon Horbyk, Tadd McCloud and Tom Dunn were present. Doug Castleman was absent.
The next regular board meeting is 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at the Exceptional Child Cooperative.
