Police say a man became belligerent during an arrest that left a machine broke at the Texas County Jail.

An inmate at the Texas County Jail faces new charges after being accused of damaging jail property and biting a corrections officer.

A Texas County Sheriff’s Department deputy on Sunday investigated an incident at the jail in which a reportedly unruly inmate had broken off a fire sprinkler head in his cell and subsequently set off fire alarms in the jail.

The investigating officer reported that when he arrived at the jail booking area, he observed a corrections officer struggling with a 35-year-old male inmate, of Licking. The inmate’s right wrist was handcuffed to the booking bench and the jailer was attempting to handcuff the other wrist.

After the deputy assisted in handcuffing the inmate’s other wrist, the jailer informed him that the inmate had bitten him on his side during the scuffle. The officer observed bruising in the bite area, and photographs were taken.

Another corrections officer who witnessed the altercation also provided information to the investigating deputy.

Following the investigation, the jailer was sent to Texas County Memorial Hospital for evaluation, and a report was sent to the county prosecutor seeking charges against the inmate of assault on a law officer and damaging jail property.

No name was released until the filing of formal charges.
