New construction planned at the Houston School District.

Voters approved the Houston School District’s $4 million bond for improvements in resounding fashion Tuesday.

With 72-percent approval, the district will receive funds to begin improvements that include an expanded cafeteria, new library, roof repairs, adding air conditioning to Hiett Gymnasium and connecting the current middle and high school buildings.

“That’s a convincing ‘yes’ and vote of confidence for the school district, a vote for kids and a vote for the future of this community,” Superintendent Scott Dill said shortly after the 962-370 victory for the school. “The taxpayers said ‘yes’ to us. They’ve said this is the right project at the right time.”

Dill, who has been campaigning face-to-face at meetings and other places across the area in the weeks leading up to the election, said his first step is “a good night’s sleep.” Then the process begins by setting up pre-bid meetings next week to begin roof repairs.

He said construction ground breaking will begin in the fall. Expansion of the cafeteria will take place in the summer of 2014.

“It’s a good project, and I’ve believed that from the start,” Dill said. “This is an absolute team win start to finish. It’s something we as a community did. I’m so proud of this community and the work that is being done.”

Dill said communication was the key to the victory at the polls. He said it will continue as construction and improvements begin.

“The relationships we formed during this process of campaigning will be ones we carry forward,” he said.

That’s a convincing ‘yes’ and vote of confidence for the school district, a vote for kids and a vote for the future of this community.”
