A 5K next month in Houston will help bring a K-9 dog to the Houston Police Department. Make that a 5K-9.
The Fast and the Furriest will be Saturday, July 13, at Emmett Kelly Park in Houston. A kids’ race begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the run/walk for adults at 8 a.m.
The registration fee is $25 for adults and $15 for children. Forms must be submitted by July 6 to receive a T-shirt. Race day registration will be from 6:45-7:45 a.m. the day of the race, but does not include a shirt.
Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners as well as the top runner in each age category: 11-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-and-over. Ribbons will be given to the top three boys and girls in the kids’ race.
Following the awards ceremony at 9:15 a.m., a K-9 demonstration will feature Cpl. Josh Campbell of the Rolla Police Department and Officer Brad Evans of the Houston Police Department. Evans will be performing with Houston’s dog, a German Sheppard named Rook.
Food and drinks will be served at 10:30 a.m.
Houston police are raising $10,000 to purchase the department’s first K-9 dog. The animal will be used for narcotics detection and raising awareness in the school district.
