An investigation into a student's behavior sparked a criminal inquiry at Houston High School.

The Houston Police Department says a 15-year-old girl attending summer school at Houston High School was in possession of prescription drugs and visibly impaired, and then lied to authorities about where she got them.

According to a report, the girl was reportedly late for school June 20, and her teacher observed her acting “disheveled and disoriented.” Police were called in, and a school representative showed an officer a beef jerky can containing five yellow pills and a clear plastic wrapper containing crushed yellow powder that had reportedly been found in the girl’s bag by the instructor and school principal.

Police said that during an investigation, the girl admitted that the pills and powder were Xanax, and claimed to have received the drugs from a friend while on school grounds. She reportedly retracted that allegation the following day, and indicated she and the friend had stayed overnight at the girl’s former stepmother’s house, and the friend had stolen Xanax there and split it up between them.

The friend was interviewed and denied stealing drugs or providing any to the suspect.

Houston Police Chief Jim McNiell said a report about the incident had been provided to the county juvenile office, and that authorities there will decide whether to proceed with charges in adult court or keep the matter at the juvenile level. Charges pending against the girl include felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor making a false report.
