A construction project is nearing an end at Summersville, where a new library will more than double the space for residents in eastern Texas County.

The Summersville branch of the Texas County Library will close Friday as a move begins to a new facility that more than doubles the current space.

The new library on the south side of the town’s square is major step for the eastern Texas County community. Earlier, a $241,610 grant was received through the Community Development Block Grant program by the Texas County Library Foundation. The Texas County Library system contributed $63,000 of cash and in-kind services toward the project. The building was owned by the Roger Kirkman family, whose donation of a portion of the purchase price made the project possible.

More books, the latest in computers and display areas will be featured at the new location. The library acquired shelving from the bankrupt inventory of Borders for cents on the dollar.

A brigade is set to form Saturday, Aug. 3, to move books from the old location to the new, which will open the following Monday. It’s the first of several dates planned to celebrate the expansion of library services. On Saturday, Aug. 10, a summer reading program is planned. The grand opening is planned from 9 a.m. until noon, Saturday, Aug. 17.
