Runners and walkers hit the pavement in downtown Houston early Saturday morning to support bringing a K-9 narcotics dog to the community.

Proceeds from the Fast and the Furriest –– hosted by the Houston Police Department –– benefit the effort to purchase “Rooke” and pay for supplies and upkeep.

Riley Cavaness of Houston was the overall male winner. Amanda McNew won the women’s race.

The run and walk was just the beginning of the activities. K-9 officers from the region, including Houston High School graduate Josh Campbell of the Rolla Police Department, participated in bite work and drug detection with their dogs. After the demonstrations, Houston officers took turns in the dunking booth. There was also a bounce house, food, bake sale and money machine.
