The Houston board of education set the annual school levy last week.

The Houston school board approved the tax rate for fiscal 2014 at last week’s monthly meeting.

The incidental rate will be $2.75 and the debt service rate will be 80 cents for a total tax rate of 3.55. The rate includes a voluntary rollback of .5265 cents from the district.

Also at the meeting, board members:

––Approved the annual financial report from Secretary Janice Maxwell that will be submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Itt is available on the DESE website.

––Created a salary schedule for the position of speech language pathologist assistant. The job is a new one for the district and the state.

––Received evaluations related to discipline and summer school.

––Promoted Donald McCallister to the director of maintenance.

––Approved the following hires: Matthew Peterson, foreign languages; Crystal Bartels, speech implementer; Mary Jane Lybyer, speech language pathologist; Tricia Brauch, speech language pathologist; and Tammy Storie, speech language pathologist.

––Accepted a resignation from Sylvia Lyons pending her payment of $1,500 for breaking her contract in August.

––Approved increasing Deanna Smith’s salary to $28,634 plus benefits for the 2013-’14 school year. An error was made in the previous approval of her salary.

Board members Jim Root, Sam Kelley, Jo Holland, Curtis Hubbs, Sharon Horbyk and Tom Dunn were present. Tadd McCloud was absent.

The next school board meeting is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Exceptional Child Cooperative.
