Houston junior Lizzy Swindell makes contact in Thursday's season opener against Stoutland. Swindell was 2-for-2 with four RBIs in Houston's 24-9 win.

The Houston softball team’s offense was in midseason form to begin 2013.

The Lady Tigers scored 14 times in the first inning and never slowed down as they rolled to a 24-9 three-inning victory Thursday against visiting Stoutland on Carter Field.

HHS (1-0) overcame pitching struggles – three pitchers combined to walk 17 batters – with an offensive outburst. Lizzy Swindell knocked in four runs and sisters Taylor and Tommy Franklin scored four runs apiece.

The Lady Tigers took control from the get-go by sending 19 runners to the plate in the first inning to take a commanding 14-1 lead. Swindell knocked in three runs in the inning. Kaylea Preheim had a RBI double, and Emily Harrison and Hailey Dodson had consecutive run-scoring singles.

After a sloppy third inning allowed Stoutland to creep back into the game, Houston put the victory away by scoring seven times in the bottom of the third. Belle Knarr and Taylor Franklin had back-to-back RBI doubles during the inning. The game ended when freshman Stephanie Crewse sprinted home on a wild pitch with one out for the 15-run rule.

Harrison, a senior, got the victory in her first-ever appearance on the mound. She didn’t allow a hit but did walk nine and allowed three runs – one earned – in two innings.

Freshman Tori McCloud walked all five batters she faced in the top of the third before she was lifted for Taylor Franklin.
