To earn the program’s second-ever district championship, the Houston Lady Tigers will have to defeat their biggest rivals.
Sixth-seeded HHS and top-seeded Licking square off at 6 p.m. Friday night in the championship game of the Class 3 District 10 tournament. The game will be played at Cabool High School.
The Lady Tigers (10-15) are making their first championship game appearance since the 2007 season. They won their first and only district title in 2004.
Licking, the eighth-ranked team in Class 3, has only lost two times en route to an impressive 24-2 campaign. One of those losses was Jan. 30 to the Lady Tigers in the semifinals of the Mansfield Tournament, but Licking was without its best player. In the previous matchup this season, Licking rolled past HHS 62-32.
“We’re not going to be scared, I know that,” Lady Tigers coach Brent Kell said. “We’re going to take it right at them and see what happens.”
Houston advanced to the championship game on Wednesday with a 53-42 victory against Willow Springs. The Lady Tigers upset third-seeded Alton 65-51 in Saturday’s opening round.
Licking cruised into the championship game with a 71-35 opening-round victory against Cabool and 65-45 semifinal win over Hartville.
