A Houston man faces several charges following his arrest Sunday, Feb. 23, in Crawford County.

A Houston man faces multiple charges following his arrest during a traffic stop by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Crawford County.

Authorities said Jimmy D. Smith, 24, was arrested Sunday on charges of tampering with a motor vehicle, first degree; possession of stolen property, a car; possession of burglary tools and driving while suspended.

Smith is alleged to have swiped the car – a white 2003 Saturn Vue – from the Walmart parking lot on Feb. 22. An investigating Houston police officer stated a man matching Smith’s description is seen on store surveillance video getting into the car and driving it away at about 11:30 a.m.

It was determined that the car’s owner, a 26-year-old Summersville woman, had left her keys in the car and its doors were unlocked. Houston police have sent a probable cause statement to the Texas County prosecutor seeking a charge of motor vehicle theft.

Smith is held at the Crawford County Jail.
