The Houston High School tennis team narrowly lost its season opener 5-4 Friday at Waynesville.

Eli Todd and Lizzy Swindell earned the lone singles victories for Houston. Todd won 8-5 and Swindell was an 8-4 winner.

In doubles play, Todd and Maya Brown won their match 8-2 and Swindell and Kelley teamed up for an 8-0 win.

“Lots of positives for our first match,” Houston coach John Jordan said. “I felt we struck the ball very well for our first match. We came out timid but as the match continued, we began to hit hard.

“An area of improvement is our net play. I felt we lost a lot of easy points at the net. These kids will get better. They really enjoy playing the game.”

In junior varsity play, Kayla Shriver won her singles match 9-7.
