The Texas County Library system’s annual summer reading program kicked off on Wednesday of last week.
Library director Molly Shelton said this year’s program is “Fizz, Boom, Read!” and carries a science-oriented theme.
At the Houston branch, 35 kids are enrolled. Attendees of opening day got things going by enjoying several activities, including a “volcano experiment.” With many mothers and library personnel watching, kids built a homemade volcano by covering a bottle with Playdough and then watched it erupt when baking soda and vinegar tinted with red food coloring were poured inside.
For the sixth consecutive year, Landmark Bank in Houston donated two bicycles (one boy’s and one girl’s) to the month-long program that will be given away in a drawing when it concludes at the end of July. Shelton said this year marks the first time Landmark Bank locations in Cabool and Licking also donated bikes to the summer reading programs in their respective cities.
