LEONARD LAYTON

Leonard Levi Layton, 83, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at Licking Park Manor.

He was born Feb. 21, 1931, Boswell, Ark., son of Daniel Marmaduke and Lola Violet Richardson Layton. He and Louise Womble were married in 1957. She passed away in 1973. He and Genie Little were married Sept. 14, 1974.

Leonard grew up in Izard County, Ark., working in cotton fields, hunting and fishing along the White River and playing basketball and baseball. After graduating from Calico Rock High School in 1952, he joined the Army for two years, mostly spent in Korea as a ground medic and ambulance driver in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge as a corporal, he made his home in St. Louis for 20 years. He worked with Lock Joint Pipe Company, Grantwood Alilico Road Construction, Flex-o-line Manufacturing and Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth Company.

While in Korea, he accepted Christ as his Savior. He began attending church at First Baptist Church in Licking.

He moved to Licking in the early 1970s and worked at Rawlings Sporting Goods until a stroke rendered him disabled in 1981.

Following his stroke, he stayed busy with farming, cattle, horses, hunting, fishing, visiting Arkansas and grandchildren. He was a member of the VFW, coached toss-ball, made sorghum molasses and helped to 
track the White River Trace Trail-of-Tears through Texas County. He enjoyed traveling to Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sisters, Nila Florene Claxton and Ila Lorene Byram.

Survivors include his wife, Genie; four children, Mike Layton and Cendy Carson of Sedalia, Debbie Stilley of Norwood and Stacie Hutsell of Licking; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Emil Layton of Kansas City, Kan., Arthur Layton of Pocahontas, Ark., and Remil Layton of Mountain Home, Ark.; and a host of other family members and friends.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at Fox Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Gifford officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Boone Creek Cemetery.
