A St. James teenager won the Houston Sorosis Club’s “Christmas in July 5K” by less than one second on Saturday.

Isaac Atlis edged Houston’s Shaun Flaim by 0.25 seconds to finish first overall in the fundraising race. Atlis, who is 15 years old, finished in 23:12.87 compared to 23:13.12 for Flaim, who is 39.

Don Sechrest, 48, finished in third with a time of 23:57.74.

Other winners in the 5K were:

MEN

  • 19-and-under: Nathan Sawyer, 14, 25:46.80.
  • 20-39: Adam Stipanovich, 26, 30:43.87.
  • Over-40: Fred Craig, 56, 23:58.93.

WOMEN

  • 19-and-under: Alexis Fuwell, 14, 31:19.56.
  • 20-29: Kimberly Epperly, 26, 31:40.19.
  • 30-39: Melanie Cook, 34, 26:39.23.
  • 40-49: Carla McDaniel, 44, 29:34.61.
  • Over-50: Lynn Atterberry, 56, 31:54.69.

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund the Sorosis Club’s annual scholarships presented to graduating Houston High School seniors.
