A production of "Steel Magnolias" is planned July 12 in Houston.

The Houston Community Betterment and Arts Council is sponsoring a dramatic production this evening (Saturday).

The Star Dramatic Company, of Willow Springs, will present “Steel Magnolias” in the community building at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds.

Made familiar by a popular movie by the same name, the story revolves around six women in Louisiana. Action is set in Truvy’s Beauty Salon in the small town of Chinquapin, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done.

Helped by an eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for 40 years”), an eccentric millionaire named Miss Clairee, (who has a raging sweet tooth) and the local social leader, M’Lynn (whose daughter, Shelby – the prettiest girl in town – is about to marry a “good ole boy”).

Filled with hilarious repartee and several acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the tale moves toward tragedy which affects them all, but also draws on the underlying strength and love of a truly special friendship. The play is directed by Craig Fowler.

Ticket prices are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and the performance will begin at 7 p.m.

Ticket requests can be made at the Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston’s Facebook page.
