Members of the Houston City Council met Monday at city hall.

The Houston City Council gave first-round approval Monday to vacate some easements in an area targeted for cleanup by the property owner.

Terry Snelling told the council he plans to make improvements to the tracts.

The council held the first reading of an ordinance that would vacate easements in and around a hillside and pond off Walnut Street:

•Running north from Fourth Street to the center of Brushy Creek.

•Situated east of the existing Cedar Street.

•Of an alley way in the middle of an existing pond.

The city would continue to maintain its utility easements. Any other owners affected also would gain the rights to their property.

Second and final readings are planned at the council’s meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

In other matters, members:

—Discussed steps to continue to force demolition for two properties remaining on its 2013 list. The council plans to hold a closed session to discuss it, and also is expected to target properties deemed eyesores in 2015.

—Authorized painting the interior of the city’s north water tank off Forrest Drive. Bids will be sought for the project, which may cost as much as $100,000. Funds will come from a reserve used to handle such emergencies. Recent work at both city towers — Forrest Drive and Cleveland Road — have been completed: Each involved modifications to improve water flow circulation and dispensing of chlorine. Both are online.

—Are awaiting a long-term plan developed by a Drury University program. It will be incorporated into city government’s vision.

—Are seeking a backup driver for the city’s transit system.
