Superintendent Scott Dill said he welcomes any member of the public with interests in the community and its kids to apply for the vacant seat on the Houston Schools board of education.

Applications will be accepted through 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, for the slot that became available when longtime board member Sharon Horbyk resigned earlier this month.

“A seat on the board of education is an essential spot in our community,” Dill said. “We welcome anyone who has an interest in our kids as well as ensuring we are being good stewards of taxpayer money.”

The entire process of filling the vacancy will be done in open session. Dill said the current board will review applications during the June 9 meeting, name finalists and set a date – likely a special meeting – to conduct interviews.

Criteria for applying for the board include being at least 24 years old and a resident taxpayer in the Houston R-1 School District. Candidates may not be serving a felony sentence or period of probation and cannot be registered as a sex offender.

Applications are available at the superintendent’s office. Dill said he welcomes any questions about the board.

“I’ll be happy to speak to anyone about the expectations, the amount of time involved and what the commitment looks like,” he said.
