One person was killed and four injured Saturday morning in a U.S. 63 crash at Simmons, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
Edward R. Deen, 46, of Mountain Home, Ark., was pronounced dead at the scene by Texas County Coroner Thomas Whittaker.
Tpr. J.D. Piccinino said a northbound 2008 Pontiac Vibe driven by Patricia A. Zulfer, 42, of Mountain Home, crossed the centerline and struck the side of a southbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Dane A. Long, 37, of Houston. The collision caused the Pontiac to travel off the highway and overturn several times before landing in a field near a recycling business. Long’s vehicle overturned, ending up on its side near a township road. Both vehicles were totaled.
Zulfer was extricated from her vehicle and airlifted to Cox South. Alex Zulfer, 15, was also flown to Cox South. Kaitlyn Zulfer, 15, was taken by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital. All have moderate injuries. Long was taken by private vehicle to Texas County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
Deen’s body was taken to the Texas County Morgue in Houston.
The 8:45 a.m. call sent numerous emergency responders to the scene about one mile south of Simmons. Seven state officers were logged on the scene, as was the patrol’s major crash investigation team. The Houston Rural Fire Department Rescue Squad and Texas County Sheriff’s Department also had personnel at the crash.
As medical helicopters arrived, U.S. 63 was closed, backing up traffic several miles in each direction. Debris was scattered along the roadway.
