Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Summersville branch of Texas County Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all – a free library card.
Resources at the Summersville branch are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement.
Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies or just relax with peers. The library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including e-books, online homework help, online databases, etc. that can be accessed in person or online. It’s all free with a library card.
During the last week of the month, the library will host an activity day for children. To familiarize the younger set with their hometown library, scavenger hunts and a treasure hunt for kindergarten-eighth grade will be held 11 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 26.
Each person who signs up for a library card will be given a “I Got My Library Card Today” sticker and bookmark, and their name will be placed in a drawing to be held Wednesday, Sept. 30 for a book bag. Six will be awarded.
For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Summersville branch in person, phone 417-932-5261 or toll-free 888-609-4491, or visit the library online at texascountylibrary.lib.mo.us.
