Personnel from the Houston Rural Fire Department responded at about 4:35 p.m. Saturday to a house fire on Highway B east of Houston.
Houston Rural Fire Chief Don Gaston said three trucks and eight firefighters went to the scene – at 16943 Highway B – and successfully extinguished the fire before the house sustained severe damage. Gaston said the blaze began in a back bedroom, but its cause was unknown.
He said the firefighters arrived without a moment to spare.
“Another few minutes and it would have been unstoppable,” Gaston said. “We got right in the bedroom with it and a mattress and wall were on fire. That room was pretty much destroyed, but in the rest of the house it was just smoke damage.
“It was on its way, but we saved it. We did our job.”
Gaston said the annual fire dues for the home had been paid by Bonnie Ward.
A Texas County Memorial Hospital ambulance crew and a Texas County Sheriff’s Department deputy also responded.
