Changes are coming to the City of Houston’s utility disconnect policy if the Houston City Council approves them on Feb. 1.
The council held the first reading of an ordinance Tuesday that will guide it on shutting off utilities for non-payment. Final adoption is expected next month.
Under the proposed law:
•Services would be disconnected on the 15th of each month — rather than the 25th.
•Cutoffs would be permissible on Fridays now.
•The procedures will be outlined in writing in notices sent to delinquent customers.
Persons who have questions are encouraged to call Houston City Hall at 417-967-3348.
In other matters, members:
•Gave final approval to a new ordinance that requires eating establishments to have a trash receptacle at drive-through windows.
•Heard work continues to launch a program that would create a low-interest loan fund for businesses in the community.
•Received an update on FEMA reimbursement after floods last summer. Damage was reported to culverts on Spruce Street.Â
