Houston High School volleyball coach Barry Wheeler speaks with referee David Arthur during the 2015 district tournament. Wheeler resigned this past week.

Barry Wheeler said he had a plan. He wanted to spend six years leading the volleyball program at Houston High School and retire.

Recently, he said, that plan surprisingly changed.

While searching for a collegiate home for one of his graduating players, Wheeler stumbled upon an opening at Crowley’s Ridge College. Wheeler had previously coached 12 years at a Christian college in Michigan and tried unsuccessfully in the past to do it again.

Wheeler applied, heard from the president and took a visit to the campus. After several weeks, he was offered the job. He initially turned it down but later reconsidered.

His resignation from Houston Schools –– after one year as head coach of the Lady Tigers volleyball program and wellness coordinator –– was accepted at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

“My time here at Houston has been one of my most pleasurable experiences in education,” Wheeler said. “My last two employers made me very skeptical about administrators and parents. Houston Schools has helped change that perspective for me, and I am extremely appreciative.”

Wheeler, who led HHS to an 11-16-3 record and first-round district victory in 2015, said the Crowley’s Ridge position meets three of his professional goals: physical education department chair, head volleyball coach and the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.

Crowley’s Ridge also happens to be a sister college to his former college in Michigan and sister school to Harding University, where Wheeler graduated.

“It was plain to see during the multi-step interview process that coach Wheeler brings experience and heart to this position and will have a positive influence on our institution and students,” said Ken Hoppe, president of Crowley’s Ridge College. “He has unique ability and talents, and we are very pleased that he will direct our program using his experience and enhancing opportunity for our student athletes.”

Wheeler said he will continue laying the groundwork for the volleyball program for his successor.

“Houston will always hold that special place for me. What a great experience,” Wheeler said. “I wish all the success possible to the Houston Schools, especially to the volleyball student-athletes that I am leaving behind.”
