The Houston school board unanimously extended the contracts of three district principals during the closed session of Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
Elementary principal Jody Jarrett, middle school principal Amber Stephens and high school assistant principal Eric Sloan were all extended through the 2017-’18 school year. The lone exception was high school principal Charlie Malam, who is retiring.
Also during the meeting, board members:
•Heard from Houston resident John Impey, who expressed concerns about the district’s investigation into knocking down the Fine Arts Building. Impey shared the history of the building, which was formerly the high school, and asked the district to explore grant options to restore the facility.
After Impey’s presentation, Superintendent Scott Dill told the board the Department of Natural Resources has discovered asbestos and hazardous levels of mold in the building. He said no entry will be allowed into the building and that prior to renovation or demolition, the asbestos must be professionally removed.
•Approved the academic calendar for the 2016-’17 school year. Classes will begin Aug. 18 and conclude May 23. Graduation is May 20.
•Hired David Cope (custodian), Sara Miller (cafeteria substitute), and Lindsay Starr (personal aide) for the remainder of the current school year. Miller’s hire is pending a background check.
•Accepted the resignation of Glenda Jones, an administrative assistant, at the end of the school year. Jones is retiring.
•Made a $5,000 salary adjustment in the current fiscal year to the salary of transportation directory Joe Montgomery.
•Approved a summer school session for 2016.
