Military veteran

Gary Truman Keeling, 70, passed away Friday, March 25, 2016.

He was born Aug. 21, 1945, son of Roger Howard and Bessie Emiline Stacy Keeling. He and Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Heiney were married Nov. 27, 1969.

He was a member of the Flatwoods Cemetery Board. He was raised in church and knew the Lord. He was very active in singing at church.

He served in the Army from 1965-’67. He was stationed in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the Vietnam War as an E4 ammo specialist. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He also received the top award in his platoon for marksmanship. He was on active reserve until 1971.

He made his home in Shannon County, where he was born and raised. He worked many years and retired from the National Park Service.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, going to auctions, flea markets and gun shows. He liked to hunt and fish, attend horse shows and ballgames and spend time with his grandkids. He enjoyed singing at family gatherings.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, J.R. Keeling.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy; a son, Stacey of Ink; a daughter, Anita Brawley of Summersville; four grandchildren; a brother, Kenney Keeling; three sisters, Imogene Blake and Marlene Brawley of Summersville and Robin Porter of Ink; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were Tuesday, March 29, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gray Steelman and the Rev. Jerry Baylock officiating. Burial with military honors was in Flatwoods Cemetery.
