Jeremy St. John, who is assistant chief for the City of Houston Fire Department and a captain with the Houston Rural FD, holds a pair of partially melted fire detectors that were still functioning when they were extracted from burned houses. St. John said the fact the units still worked despite their condition bolsters the idea that having fire detectors in a house is a wise practice.
