Houston United Methodist Church announced Easter-related activities.

The Houston United Methodist Church is welcoming other denominations and interested persons to participate in the events planned during the week leading up to Easter.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, a Maundy Thursday service will commemorate the Last Supper, when Jesus commanded His disciples to “love and serve one another.”  On that night, He introduced the sharing of bread and wine that Christians have come to know as Holy Communion.  In the Methodist tradition, Holy Communion is open to all, and church members look forward to sharing with the community.

At 7 p.m. Good Friday, March 25, a Tenebrae Service will be held.  Tenebrae is Latin for “darkness” and the service uses the gradual extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of the week beginning with Palm Sunday through the burial of Jesus. It is a very moving and meaningful service that can be appreciated by all Christians.

Easter Sunday, March 27, a 7 a.m. Easter sunrise service will be held in the parking lot on the south side of the church, which is at 422 Hawthorne.  Participants are invited to bring lawn chairs.

The sunrise service will be followed by a potluck breakfast in the church’s fellowship hall, and again, all are welcome to attend.

Also on Easter, Sunday School is at 9 a.m.  At 10 a.m.,  Easter worship will include Holy Communion.

Here is a roundup of Easter activities:

A special performance is included with the Easter message at 10:35 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church at Hawthorn and Airport Road in Houston.
