A regional orchestra has announced an April concert in Willow Springs.
The Southern Ozarks Community Orchestra is presenting “An Afternoon of Classical Music” at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at the historic Star Theater in Willow Springs. The concert will feature the first and second movements of Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major “The Great” and the second movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 94.
Tickets will be available at the door for $7 apiece. Children ages 12 and under are free.
Since 2009, the Willow Springs Arts Council has sponsored the Southern Ozarks Community Orchestra. The group was formerly known as the West Plains Regional Orchestra and the Southern Ozarks Chamber Orchestra. It moved to Willow Springs in an effort to become more centrally located for the musicians participating.
The orchestra features 30 volunteer musicians from Licking, Houston, Cabool, Mountain Grove, Willow Springs, Ava, Mountain View, Eminence, Springfield and Melbourne, Ark. It is overseen by a board of directors that includes Jodie Forbes, music teacher at Houston Schools.
The orchestra includes music instructors, retirees and high school students who enjoy coming together to perform both classical and contemporary pieces. Currently, instrumentation includes violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, bassoon and percussion. The group strives to perform at least five times a year at the Star Theater and also enjoys doing “run-outs” to other communities.
