The City of Houston will examine zoning designations and city corporate boundaries in an attempt to spark development in the community, the Houston City Council discussed Monday.
Members of the Houston Planning and Zoning Commission met before the regular council meeting to get the ball rolling on the matter. Primarily, under examination is West Highway 17 to a highway business designation. Expansion of the city limits would be easiest, said City Administrator Larry Sutton, by moving east along Brushy Creek Road and west on Highway 17.
Sutton said talks have only been preliminary, and no final decisions have been made. Former mayor Steve Hutcheson chairs the P & Z panel.
In other matters, members:
•Selected Sheila Walker, Ward II, as the mayor pro tem.
•Administered an oath to Ward I alderman Joe Honeycutt, who won reelection last month.
•Will pave additional roads after a drop in the asphalt per ton rate by about 10 percent. Short side streets in the downtown business district will be targeted. The city had $20,000 budgeted for road oil, which will not be needed.
•Heard that a power outage Saturday was due to a downed limb on Forrest Street.
•Learned talks continue on the maintenance of hangars at the Houston Memorial Airport.
